Indefinite pronouns refer to people or things in a general or unspecified way. Other indefinite pronouns include <strong>anything, everybody, no one, someone, anyone, something<\/strong>, and <strong>nothing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"leftonedot30\">Pronouns ending in <strong>-one<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>-body<\/strong>\u00a0refer to <strong>people<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<p class=\"leftonedot30\">Pronouns ending in <strong>-thing<\/strong>\u00a0refer to <strong>things<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Anybody vs Anyone<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Anybody<\/strong> and <strong>anyone<\/strong> mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably. However, <strong>anyone<\/strong> is more commonly used in<strong> formal situations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, pronouns ending in <strong>-body<\/strong> have the same meaning as their <strong>-one<\/strong>\u00a0counterparts:<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">anybody = anyone<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">somebody = someone<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">nobody = no one<\/div>\n<p>It is important to note that <strong>no one<\/strong> can be written in two ways:<\/p>\n<div class=\"righto\">no one<\/div>\n<div class=\"righto\">no-one<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrongx\">noone<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>SOMEBODY<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Somebody<\/strong> means<strong> someone (somebody, someone, to someone)<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe use <strong>somebody<\/strong> in <strong>affirmative sentences<\/strong> and in <strong>questions where we offer something or ask for something<\/strong>. We can also use <strong>somebody<\/strong> in questions when we expect a <strong>positive answer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineX\"><strong>Somebody<\/strong> left a message for you.<br \/>\n<strong>Someone<\/strong> left a message for you.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineX\">Can <strong>somebody<\/strong> help me with this box?<br \/>\nCan <strong>someone<\/strong> help me with this box?<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineX\" style=\"margin-bottom: 40px;\"><strong>Somebody<\/strong> told me the news yesterday.<br \/>\n<strong>Someone<\/strong> told me the news yesterday.<\/div>\n<h3>Questions with Negation<\/h3>\n<p>Some questions contain <strong>negation<\/strong> because the speaker expects a specific answer. These questions usually start with <strong>a contracted form of not (isn\u2019t, didn\u2019t, haven\u2019t, etc.)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineX\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\">Didn\u2019t you hear <strong>somebody<\/strong> calling?<br \/>\nDidn\u2019t you hear <strong>someone<\/strong> calling?<\/div>\n<p>Even though these questions include <strong>not<\/strong>, we can still use <strong>somebody<\/strong>, because we expect a <strong>yes<\/strong> answer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineX\">Hasn\u2019t <strong>somebody<\/strong> taken care of this already?<br \/>\nHasn\u2019t <strong>someone<\/strong> taken care of this already?<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>NOBODY<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Nobody<\/strong> means <strong>no one (nobody, to nobody, no one, to no one)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Since <strong>nobody<\/strong> already has a <strong>negative meaning<\/strong>, we do <strong>not<\/strong> add extra negation in the sentence. This is different from some languages, where double negatives are used.<\/p>\n<div class=\"righto\"><strong>Nobody<\/strong> knows the answer.<br \/>\n<strong>No one<\/strong> knows the answer.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrongx\" style=\"margin-bottom: 40px;\">Nobody doesn\u2019t know the answer.<br \/>\nAdding \u201cdoesn\u2019t\u201d makes the sentence unclear.<\/div>\n<h3>Nobody and Negative Words (rarely, hardly, etc.)<\/h3>\n<p>We do <strong>not<\/strong> use <strong>nobody<\/strong> with other negative words like <strong>rarely<\/strong> or <strong>hardly<\/strong>. Instead, we use <strong>anybody<\/strong> in such cases.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wrongx\">He hardly talks to nobody.<\/div>\n<div class=\"righto\" style=\"margin-bottom: 40px;\">He hardly talks to anybody.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrongx\">She rarely sees nobody these days.<\/div>\n<div class=\"righto\">She rarely sees anybody these days.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>ANYBODY<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Anybody<\/strong> means <strong>anyone, someone, or no one (depending on the sentence context)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We use <strong>anybody<\/strong> in <strong>questions<\/strong> and <strong>negative sentences<\/strong>. We can also use <strong>anybody<\/strong> in <strong>affirmative sentences that have a negative meaning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineX\">Did <strong>anybody<\/strong> call while I was out?<br \/>\nDid <strong>someone<\/strong> call while I was out?<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineX\">She doesn\u2019t know <strong>anybody<\/strong> in this city.<br \/>\nShe doesn\u2019t know <strong>anyone<\/strong> in this city.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineX\" style=\"margin-bottom: 40px;\">There was hardly <strong>anybody<\/strong> at the event.<br \/>\nThere was hardly <strong>anyone<\/strong> at the event.<\/div>\n<h3>Anybody after \u201cif\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anybody<\/strong> is often used after <strong>if.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"lineX\"><strong>If anybody<\/strong> needs help, let me know.<br \/>\n<strong>If anyone<\/strong> needs help, let me know.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineX\" style=\"margin-bottom: 40px;\"><strong>If anybody<\/strong> has a question, raise your hand.<br \/>\n<strong>If someone<\/strong> has a question, raise your hand.<\/div>\n<h3>Anybody vs Nobody in Negative Sentences<\/h3>\n<p>We do <strong>not<\/strong> use <strong>not anybody<\/strong> as the subject of a sentence.
