They help <strong>describe two actions happening at the same time<\/strong>. In some cases, <strong>while<\/strong> and <strong>when<\/strong> can be used interchangeably, but not always. It\u2019s important to understand the differences between them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"boxborder\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">\n<h5>\u201cWhen\u201d as a Question Word<\/h5>\n<p><strong>When<\/strong> is also used as a <strong>question word<\/strong> in <strong>open-ended questions (Wh- questions)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineXp\"><strong>When<\/strong> does the store open?<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\"><strong>When<\/strong> did you arrive?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>When Do We Use \u201cWhen\u201d and \u201cWhile\u201d?<\/h2>\n<p>We use <strong>when<\/strong> and <strong>while<\/strong> to describe two actions that happened at the same time. However, the structure depends on the type of action:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A longer action \u2192 Past Continuous<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A shorter, completed action \u2192 Past Simple<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">While\/when + Past Continuous + Past Simple<\/h4>\n<div class=\"lineXp\"><strong>When<\/strong> he was washing the dishes, she answered the phone.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\"><strong>While<\/strong> he was fixing the car, his brother bought the tools.<\/div>\n<p>Both <strong>when<\/strong> and <strong>while<\/strong> work if they introduce the <strong>longer action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">Past Simple + when\/while + Past Continuous<\/h4>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">She answered the phone when <strong>he<\/strong> was washing the dishes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">His brother bought the tools <strong>while<\/strong> he was fixing the car.<\/div>\n<p>However, we can only use <strong>when<\/strong> before the <strong>short, completed action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wrongx\">He was fixing the car <strong>while<\/strong> his brother bought the tools.<\/div>\n<div class=\"righto\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\">He was fixing the car <strong>when<\/strong> his brother bought the tools.<\/div>\n<div class=\"boxborder\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">\n<h5>Using Commas with \u201cWhile\u201d and \u201cWhen\u201d<\/h5>\n<p>If \u201cwhile\u201d or \u201cwhen\u201d starts the sentence, use a comma.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineXp\"><strong>When<\/strong> she was studying, her friend called her.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\"><strong>While<\/strong> they were walking, it started to rain.<\/div>\n<p>If \u201cwhile\u201d or \u201cwhen\u201d is in the middle, no comma is needed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">Her friend called her <strong>when<\/strong> she was studying.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">It started to rain <strong>while<\/strong> they were walking.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Shortening Sentences with \u201cWhen\u201d and \u201cWhile\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>We can shorten <strong>while<\/strong> and <strong>when<\/strong> sentences by <strong>removing the subject and auxiliary verb<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"lineXp\"><strong>When<\/strong> at the store, buy some milk.<br \/>\n<strong>When<\/strong> you are at the store, buy some milk.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">She was humming <strong>while<\/strong> making dinner.<br \/>\nShe was humming <strong>while<\/strong> she was making dinner.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>When to Use \u201cWhile\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>We use <strong>while<\/strong> to describe <strong>two long actions happening at the same time<\/strong>. Both actions use <strong>Past Simple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">When + Past Simple + Past Simple<\/h4>\n<div class=\"lineXp\">She smiled <strong>when<\/strong> she saw her friend.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lineXp\" style=\"margin-bottom: 40px;\">He turned off the lights <strong>when<\/strong> he left the room.<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">2\ufe0f\u20e3 A Long Action Interrupted by a Short Action<\/h3>\n<p>We use <strong>when<\/strong> before the <strong>shorter action<\/strong>, which happens <strong>during a longer action<\/strong>.
