A gerund<\/strong> and a present participle<\/strong> both look the same because they are formed by adding \u201d-ing\u201d<\/strong> to a verb. This can be confusing, but they have different functions in a sentence.<\/p>\n

A gerund<\/strong> acts like a noun<\/strong>.<\/div>\n

A present participle<\/strong> acts like a verb<\/strong> or an adjective<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Because both gerunds<\/strong>\u00a0and present participles<\/strong>\u00a0end in \u201d-ing,\u201d<\/strong> many people call them \u201cthe -ing form.\u201d<\/strong> However, their function in a sentence is what makes them different.
\nTo tell the difference:<\/p>\n

\u2714 If the word acts as a noun<\/strong>, it\u2019s a gerund<\/strong>.<\/div>\n
