Past Perfect<\/h1>\n

The Past Perfect is used to talk about an event that happened before another event occurred in the past. This tense shows which event happened first. This means we use the Past Perfect to talk about a past activity that occurred further in the past.<\/p>\n

Affirmative sentences in Past Perfect<\/h2>\n

We use the auxiliary verb had<\/i> and the Past Participle form of the main verb to form sentences.<\/p>\n

Subject<\/span> + had<\/span> + Past Participle<\/span> + the rest of the sentence<\/h5>\n
I<\/span> had<\/span> been<\/span><\/strong> to France before.<\/div>\n

To shorten sentence we can contract had to \u2018d<\/b>, e.g. I had \u21d2 I\u2019d.<\/b><\/p>\n

Negative sentences in Past Perfect<\/h2>\n

To form negative sentences we add not<\/i> between had<\/i> and the Past Participle.<\/p>\n

Subject<\/span> + had<\/span> + not<\/span> + Past Participle<\/span> + the rest of the sentence<\/h5>\n
I<\/span> had<\/span> not<\/span> been<\/span><\/strong> to France before.<\/div>\n

We can shorten had not<\/i> to hadn\u2019t<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Questions in the Past Perfect<\/h2>\n

Questions are formed by inversion of had<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The Usage of Past Perfect<\/h5>\n

We use the Past Perfect to talk about:<\/p>\n

+ activity that finished before a specific point in the past<\/b><\/div>\n
I had been to all major cities in the USA by the time I was 30.
\nAdam had worked here before 2015.<\/div>\n
+ activity that occurred earlier in the past than the second past activity<\/b><\/div>\n
Before he went on his trip he had eaten all of his snacks.
\nBy the time she woke up, her husband had already gone to work.<\/div>\n
+ duration of the activity that ended in the past (used with stative verbs)<\/b><\/div>\n
I had lived in Spain for two years before I moved to the USA last month.
\nShe had had her dog for two weeks before she figured out that it\u2019s a male.<\/div>\n
+ unreal and imaginary things in the past (also with \u201cwish\u201d and third conditional<\/b><\/div>\n
If I had known you were back, I would have called.
\nI wish I hadn’t eaten that cake!<\/div>\n
+ reason for something that happened in the past<\/b><\/div>\n
I was very proud because my daughter had graduated with honors.
\nI bought a new car because my old one had broken down.<\/div>\n
+ uncertain situations (with expressions as if<\/i> and as though)<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n
