Past Continuous<\/h1>\n

The Past Continuous is also called the past progressive tense. This tense is used to talk about longer past activities that ended in the past. In the Past Continuous, we use verbs in the present participle (verb-ing).<\/p>\n

Affirmative sentences in Past Continuous<\/h2>\n

Sentences in the Past Continuous are formed with the past form of to be<\/i> (i.e. was\/were) and the main verb in the present participle.<\/p>\n

Subject<\/span> + was\/were<\/span> + verb-ing<\/span> + the rest of the sentence<\/h5>\n
I<\/span> was<\/span> reading<\/span><\/strong> a book.<\/div>\n

In the Past Continuous, it\u2019s important to remember that to be<\/i> in the first and third-person singular takes on the form was,<\/i> instead of were<\/i>.<\/p>\n

You were<\/strong><\/span> reading a book.
\nHe was<\/strong><\/span> reading a book.<\/div>\n

Negative sentences in Past Continuous<\/h2>\n

Negative sentences are formed by adding not<\/i> between was\/were<\/i> and the verb-ing.<\/p>\n

Subject<\/span> + was\/were<\/span> + not<\/span> + verb-ing<\/span> + the rest of the sentence<\/h5>\n
I<\/span> was<\/span> not<\/span> reading<\/span><\/strong> a book.<\/div>\n

Questions in Past Continuous<\/h2>\n

We form questions by the inversion of was\/were<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The Usage of Past Continuous<\/h5>\n

We use the Past Continuous to talk about:<\/p>\n

+ a longer past activity that was interrupted by a shorter activity or event<\/b><\/div>\n
I was frying eggs when the phone rang.
\nAvah was watching TV when the mailman rang the bell.<\/div>\n
+ longer activities happening at a specific time in the past (activities happening before and after a specific time)<\/b><\/div>\n
Last Friday at 10 a.m. I was attending the meeting with Fred.
\nWe were eating dinner at 7 p.m.<\/div>\n
+ two actions happening at the same time<\/b><\/div>\n
I was not paying attention when he was giving the lecture.
\nAdam was cooking dinner while she was cleaning the house.<\/div>\n
+ a past activity lasting for a while<\/b><\/div>\n
They were traveling all day yesterday.
\nI was waiting for you for hours.<\/div>\n
+ the setting of the story or the background information<\/b><\/div>\n
When I arrived at the office Adam was working on the computer, the phone was ringing, and my boss was yelling at our company’s new staff member.
\nThe beach was brimming with activity, people were laying on their towels, some children were building a sandcastle and a couple of teenagers were swimming in the sea.<\/div>\n
