Present Continuous<\/h1>\n

The Present Continuous (also called the Present Progressive) is usually the second tense that we learn when learning English. We use the Present Continuous to talk about ongoing events (happening at the time of speaking) or about events in the near future. In this tense, we use the present participle with the verb \u201cto be\u201d.<\/p>\n

Affirmative sentences in Present Continuous<\/h2>\n

In the Present Continuous, we form sentences by using the verb to be<\/i> and the present participle form of the main verb (verb-ing).<\/p>\n

Subject<\/span> + to be<\/span> + verb-ing<\/span> + the rest of the sentence<\/h5>\n
I<\/span> am<\/span> working<\/span><\/strong> right now.<\/div>\n

It\u2019s important to remember that the verb to be<\/i> has to be appropriately conjugated according to the subject of the sentence.<\/p>\n

Negative sentences in Present Continuous<\/h2>\n

We form negative sentences by adding not<\/em> between to be<\/em> and the main verb.<\/p>\n

Subject<\/span> + to be<\/span> + not<\/span> + verb-ing<\/span> + the rest of the sentence<\/h5>\n
I<\/span> am<\/span> not<\/span> working<\/span><\/strong> right now.<\/div>\n

Questions in Present Continuous<\/h2>\n

We form questions by the inversion of to be<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The Usage of Present Continuous<\/h5>\n

We use Present Continuous to talk about:<\/p>\n

Lisa is getting married next week.

Non-continuous verbs<\/h5>\n

Non-continuous verbs are verbs that are rarely used in continuous tenses. These verbs include abstract verbs (e.g. want, need, cost), possession verbs (e.g. belong, own), emotion verbs (e.g. like, love, hate, dislike, envy). With these verbs, we usually use the Present Simple.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
