In English, \u201cmuch,” \u201cmany,” and \u201ca lot of” are used to talk about quantities (so the amount of something). They can be used with a noun or without a noun.<\/p>\n

much + uncountable noun<\/h2>\n

\u201cMuch” is used with uncountable nouns, so things that can’t be counted individually. We mostly use \u201cmuch” in negative sentences and questions. In positive sentences, it’s rare to use \u201cmuch” – only in formal situations or in writing. However, \u201cmuch” can be used in positive sentences with adverbs like \u201cso,” \u201ctoo,” and \u201cas.”<\/p>\n

That’s too much<\/span><\/strong> luggage.
\nI don’t have much<\/span><\/strong> time.

When we want to compare the amount of something, we use \u201cas much as” or \u201cas many as.”<\/p>\n

I want to buy as many clothes as<\/span><\/strong> I can afford.
\nWe don\u2019t have as much time as<\/span><\/strong> we thought.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

many + countable noun<\/h2>\n

\u201cMany” is used with countable nouns in the plural form. Like \u201cmuch,” it’s mainly used in questions and negatives, but can be used in positive sentences in formal English, writing, or with adverbs.<\/p>\n

Many<\/span><\/b> people came to see this movie.
\nShe doesn\u2019t have many<\/span><\/b> pens.

Use \u201cof” after \u201cmuch” or \u201cmany” when they are followed by an article, demonstrative pronoun, possessive adjective, or object pronoun.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of” can be used with both countable nouns or uncountable nouns. It’s less formal than \u201cmuch” or \u201cmany,” and \u201clots of” is an even more informal form. \u201cA lot of” is mostly used in positive sentences, while in negatives and questions, it\u2019s replaced by \u201cmuch” or \u201cmany.”<\/p>\n

She has a lot of<\/span><\/b> pens.

If the noun is obvious from context, you can leave it out (omit it).<\/p>\n
