We use modals to make requests sound more polite. In English, making the request short and direct is considered quite impolite. It\u2019s much better to use a longer version of the request by using modals of request, so that the request is less direct and therefore considered more polite.<\/p>\n<div class=\"leftonedot30\">Lend me some money. (direct request)<\/div>\n<p class=\"leftonedot30\">Could you lend me some money, please? (indirect request)<\/p>\n<p>There are four basic modals of request that we use: <strong>can<\/strong>, <strong>will<\/strong>, <strong>could<\/strong>, <strong>would<\/strong>, and <strong>may<\/strong> (for offers).<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" id=\"customtable\" class=\"tthird\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"40%\">more formal<\/td>\n<td width=\"60%\"><strong><span style=\"color: #fd6c6e;\">would<br \/>\ncould<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">less formal<\/td>\n<td><strong><span style=\"color: #c56bcc;\">will<br \/>\ncan<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We use the modal verbs will and can in less formal situations, whereas we use would and could in more formal situations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"leftonedot30\"><span style=\"color: #fd6c6e;\"><strong>Would<\/strong><\/span> you open the window?<\/div>\n<div class=\"leftonedot30\"><span style=\"color: #fd6c6e;\"><strong>Could<\/strong><\/span> you pass me the potatoes?<\/div>\n<div class=\"leftonedot30\"><span style=\"color: #c56bcc;\"><strong>Will<\/strong><\/span> you lend me some money?<\/div>\n<p class=\"leftonedot30\"><span style=\"color: #c56bcc;\"><strong>Can<\/strong><\/span> I borrow your pen?<\/p>\n<div class=\"boxborder\" style=\"margin-bottom: 20px;\">\n<h5>What are modal verbs?<\/h5>\n<p>Modal verbs are used to add more information to the main verb. They are always followed by the main verb in the infinitive form without <em>to<\/em> (base form). Short answers have a very simple structure. To answer affirmatively, we use YES, and then we add the appropriate subject pronoun and the modal verb can or will.
